D155 Culinary Competition Heats Up
IMG_1588.jpgFor the first time, D155 culinary students had an opportunity to face-off in a district competition utilizing their skills in a commercial kitchen. McHenry County College hosted the event allowing students to use extra ingredients from its culinary program. Student groups from each high school advanced to the final round by cooking up different dishes at their home school. Students were given a mystery basket which included Tilapia or Barramundi fish and they had to create two side dishes.

 

First, students were given a tour of the kitchen so they knew where to find utensils and how to use the equipment. They were then timed to create their dishes and were judged based on taste and presentation. Each group had to present their dish to a panel of judges to critique.

 

The first place team was Crystal Lake South:

Illysa Kossoff, Alex Papadas, and Jacksen Appelquist (assistant)

Kelly Heidt (CLC), Jack Lazzara (PR), and Shannon Widdowson (CLC- assistant)

 

The third place team was from CG:

Analyse Oehlberg, Stephanie Scrima, and Cailey Marcks (assistant)

 

They won certificates and MCC spirit wear. The first place team also received a Culinary textbook donated by Pearson. Tina Dzral from MCC and Courtney McKnight from Cary-Grove organized the event for D155.
